Course Description
This course further develops advanced Japanese proficiency through an understanding of Japanese history as a dynamic, interrelated system and employs a variety of processes to identify, analyze and evaluate cultural themes, values and ideas. Students will demonstrate ability to accurately comprehend ideas across a range of historical content.
Reflective Narrative
This course was a language and culture course taught in Japanese which covered both MLO 1 and 2. By using Japanese texts filled with difficult kanji, and teaching in Japanese Sekine sensei helped me attain a higher level of language proficiency. I also think there is no better way to learn about culture than through history, because we cannot know how we are as a people now without knowing us as a people of the past.
For the longest time since starting to study Japanese I have been wanting to learn the history of Japan in Japanese. This class was fast paced and covered a very long span of Japanese history. The texts were very difficult to read and understand, but without challenge there is no reward. Now I feel that I am able to read difficult texts in Japanese with the help of a dictionary for the words I do not know. However I still feel that I have a long way to go in improving my Japanese vocabulary, and in particular my kanji. Perhaps in the future I will pick up another Japanese history book and I will not need to rely upon supporting materials as much.
For my final presentation I compared the national anthems of Japan and the United States. Surprisingly both countries had similar outcomes of public outrage surrounding modern interpretations by rock musicians. Attached is the powerpoint and script for that presentation.
