MLO 1: Language and Communication:
1.1. Students are able to communicate effectively in Japanese in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational; and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Intermediate-High level of language proficiency, according to the ACTFL Guidelines.
1.2. Students gain competency in the Japanese language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and discourse and compare and analyze the structural differences between Japanese and English.
This MLO was covered byJapanese 3, Japanese 4, abroad at Okayama University; and Japanese 300, and Structure of the Japanese Language at CSUMB. By learning Japanese in Japanese there was no room to use English so I feel that this was the biggest benefit and downfall for me and this MLO. At first no matter how many times there were just some grammar points in which I was not able to understand without using english. Now having taken Structure of the Language there were times where the english explanation made less sense than the Japanese one.
I also feel that my ability to write Japanese has come leaps and bounds over the last two years. While before I would have to struggle and force out a simple sentence, now I can write a small paragraph without nearly as much pain as I had before. I still have much to learn until my written Japanese is as good as my English, but I am very proud of how far I have come.
When I tell people I am a Japanese major the first thing that comes to their head is language, so the fact that I have been able to go from zero Japanese language ability to now being able to communicate in Japanese I feel that I have come very far. Here are a sample of my writings from over the years.
