MLO 3: Secondary Culture
3.1. Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of the target culture with second culture.
3.2. Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture.
This MLO was covered by HCOM 345 Chicano Life and Culture. As I stated in the course reflection, I was surprised by how useful it was to have another culture to compare against aside from Japan and America. I feel that out of all the MLOs I was most pleasantly surprised buy this one to have an effect on me so drastically. It was nice to step back and look at Minority culture and how it affected me in Japan. The Most challenging aspect of this MLO was the sheer amount of Spanish, which having only studied Japanese, put me out of severe disadvantage. However having gone to a high school with a 70% Latino population I have some Spanish hiding in the back of my mind. Now that I have been studying Japanese for many years I have learned how to acquire foreign language, and I feel that learning Spanish is not too far out of my grasp.
