I think this course was one of the biggest challenges during my time here at CSUMB and it certainly came with a large reward. At first the idea of teaching young and rambunctious children seemed unappealing, yet after a few days I grew accustomed to teaching the class and subsequently enjoyed the working environment much more. I feel like this course was a very pivotal moment in my life because I had an extremely useful and hands on introduction into teaching, and what it means to be an educator. Yet while I don't feel that I am a perfect teacher, I know that this course has prepared me to a point that I can comfortably teach Elementary school children basic Japanese language and culture.
In going to highland elementary school each week I often compared to work I did to some of the same events but I was able to take part in at that age. However these children were not so lucky as me to go to a school whose biggest financial burden was photocopy paper. Many of my students came from low income households, and it really dawned on me that it was my social responsibility to help the less privileged. None of this would have been possible if we were not compassionate about the children. Is impossible to generalize a group of Young individuals whom have so many different personalities, and put them into a one-size-fits-all teaching environment. A group we made sure that what we were teaching was understood by the majority of students, so we knew that's what we were saying made sense, and then we would help individual students as needed.
Course materials consisted mainly of interesting articles around teaching and language acquisition. Course work included weekly lesson plans, weekly reflections in Japanese, reflections about the articles assigned, and presentations regarding our service learning site.
